JPAL Associate and Harvard professor Nava Ashraf, whose work tests insights from behavioral
economics in the context of large-scale field experiments in health, education, agriculture and microfinance, is seeking a Boston-based Field Research Manager.

Activities
This Field Research Manager will work closely with Professor Ashraf on all her projects, and will be involved from the design, start-up phase, and project period of numerous upcoming field experiments, and in significant policy and practitioner outreach.

Specifically, the Field Research Manager will undertake a variety tasks including, but not limited to: overseeing multiple project associates and their projects, designing survey questionnaires, conducting qualitative research, running pilot exercises, refining study design and surveying instruments, managing survey teams, negotiating contracts with survey firms, checking and cleaning data, assisting in the writing of project reports and policy memos, coordinating with local partners running the programs being evaluated, and supporting outreach to high-level policymakers in country.

Skill Set
The position requires a unique skill set of intellectual curiosity, technical skills (such as STATA), solid writing skills (for practitioner summaries, etc.) and high-level organizational and management skills. The Field Research Manager will work closely with a team of 5-7 associates on the ground in Zambia, who run the multiple field experiments there, and will likely take several trips to the field sites in Zambia as the projects require.  The Field Research Manager will also be expected to communicate with co-Principal Investigators.

Required Qualifications and Experience:
  •     A Master's degree in economics, social sciences, public policy, or related fields.
  •     Flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently as a team player.
  •     Training in development economics.
  •     Prior work or volunteer experience in development in developing countries desired.
  •     Experience living and conducting field research in a developing country is a strong plus.
  •     Several years of relevant work experience and/or research experience
  •     Excellent management and organizational skills along with strong quantitative skills.
  •     Fluency and excellent communication (writing) skills in English
  •     Demonstrated ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organizations
  •     Knowledge of STATA (strongly preferred), SAS, or other data analysis software
  •     Familiarity with randomized controlled trials
  •     Attention to detail and highly organized.
  •     We are looking for a commitment period of preferably two years for this position
