About the Job:
Ford Foundation is seeking a Program Officer - Improving Access to Financial Services. S/he will be working under the direction of director of financial assets unit, and will be responsible for developing, monitoring, and coordinating grant making activities to increase the access of poor and very poor people in developing countries to affordable and responsible financial and non-financial services and public programs.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  •     Develop grant making and other activities to implement three strategies to achieve the goals of this work:
  •         Promote the widespread adoption of the universal standards for social performance management (SPM) and SPM systems that improve the ability of financial institutions in developing countries to serve poor people;
  •         Strengthen the capacity of financial institutions to implement the universal standards and SPM systems;
  •         Identify, test, and promote new approaches, combining financial and non-financial services, that help very poor households to build assets and to move toward economic security.
  •     Solicit, review, and respond to grant proposals and prepare recommendations for foundation's funding;
  •     Provide intellectual leadership in the field of financial and public services;
  •     Work closely with other program officers throughout the foundation whose work relates to the central mission of the portfolio;
  •     Collaborate broadly with scholars and practitioners, government agencies, NGOs, and other donors on issues of common program concern.

Qualifications:

  •     Significant experience analyzing, researching or working with financial institutions and a broad spectrum of public and private sector policies and programs, including social protection policies, that create opportunities for poor and low-income people in developing countries to create financial assets;
  •     Demonstrated capacity for: policy analysis, developing effective working relationships with public sector agencies and for-profit and non-profit financial institutions, and development of innovative strategies to build financial assets for disadvantaged populations;
  •     Excellent analytical, organizational, financial analysis, and oral and written communications skills are essential.
